COMENTÁRIO. This Will Make Your Kids Happy: The big news of the day is clearly this: Disney announced Animation Titles for DVD. "It's a market that's ready to bust loose," Richard Cook, chairman of Walt Disney Motion Pictures Group, told Reuters. Interesting, though I would have said it was ready to bust loose quite awhile back. Buena Vista Home Entertainment has come out and said that they plan to release nice animated Disney titles to DVD over the next four months as part of a "once-in-a-millenium celebration." I don't imagine I'll be around for the next one. Cook goes on to say, "We felt like the timing was right. First, we are going into the holiday season, when a lot of DVD players will be sold. Also the process is similar to 1985, when we released Pinocchio on tape." Apparently, in 1985, people needed to feel that warm-fuzzy feeling knowing that product would be available for the new entertainment medium. Now, according to them, this is the case with DVD. However, with over 4,400 titles now available on DVD and general positive forward progress being made with not only software, but hardware as well, I think most of us have long since worked out the warm-fuzziness from our systems. However, Disney animation is definitely a nice perk that many individuals have been waiting oh-so-long for. Each of the DVD titles will be given a 60-day release window at which time the disc will disappear from the shelves for an indefinite period of time for up to 10 years - OR will stay on release. I wonder if they'll release the details regarding the length to which title will stay on release - and for how long. I sincerely doubt it - which quite simply means, "Don't lose out - by them all now while you still can!" We'll see. Cook reitterated that Disney will release future DVDs day-and-date with VHS. 'So, tell us which titles are coming to DVD, already!' Okay, okay - calm down. Pinocchio, the first Disney release to tape in 1985, will arrive in stores on 11/26. Three more titles will follow on 11/11 - these being: 101 Dalmations, Hercules and Mulan. What else? How about Lady and the Tramp, Peter Pan, and Lion King II: Simba's Pride on 11/23. And finally - The Jungle Book and The Little Mermaid will wind up in your shopping bag on 12/7. Now, I may be inclined to slap myself over this later - but, I'm about taking chances so long as you folks understand that this isn't official by any means. However, it is very likely that an additional title will see the light in the coming months as it is released day-and-date with VHS. Does a naked man and his loin cloth swinging through the trees ring any bells? Marc Flemming |
