TOSHIBA BRINGS DVD-VIDEO PERFORMANCE INTO THE
DTV ERA
--Toshiba Introduces the Platinum Standard
For Video Performance--
WAYNE, NJ, May 19, 1998 - Toshiba today introduced
its
third-generation line of DVD-Video players
-- four new models that
utilize breakthrough technologies to bring
the format closer to video
and audio perfection than ever before. The
line is led by Toshiba's
revolutionary Platinum Standard SD7108, the
world's first DVD-Video
player to include a ColorStream PROä
progressive scan output for
film-like image quality when viewed on any
progressive scan display
device, including Toshiba ColorStream PRO-equipped
televisions.
With its ColorStream PRO
Progressive/Component Video output,
Toshiba's new SD7108 DVD-Video player delivers
the full image
resolution available on DVD discs, all of
which are mastered in
progressive scan. When connected to
Toshiba's 71-inch TP71H90 or
61-inch TP61H90 Cinema Series TheaterView
projection TVs or the
65-inch TW65H80 TheaterWide set -- each equipped
with a ColorStream
PRO input -- the SD7108 provides a flicker-free
picture, free of NTSC
line structure. Other advantages of a progressively
scanned display
include improved brightness without a compromise
in color or contrast,
enhanced vertical and temporal resolution,
plus the ability to sit
even closer to the screen.
"Since the introduction
of the DVD-Video format, consumers and
industry professionals have looked to Toshiba
for leadership in all
aspects of DVD development," noted Steve Nickerson,
Vice President of
Video Marketing. "The introduction of
our Platinum Standard SD7108
marks a major milestone in the development
of the DVD format. Its
non-interlaced 480P image makes it the first
DVD player to meet the
standard for picture performance in the DTV
era. Moreover, the
technologies contained in our SD7108 are mirrored
throughout our new
DVD-Video player line, providing consumers
with a level of performance
and features unparalleled in the industry."
Toshiba DVD-Video Means Maximum Picture Quality
Toshiba's DVD line for 1998
utilizes several of the world's most
advanced digital technologies to offer a level
of picture quality that
defines the ultimate expression of DVD-Video
performance. For
example, Toshiba this year includes ColorStreamä
component video
outputs in three of its new DVD players (SD7108,
SD3108 and SD2108).
The ColorStream component video connection
results in superior image
purity, incredibly lifelike colors and crisp
detail.
The first manufacturer to
include 10-bit video D/A converters in
its DVD-Video players, Toshiba continues to
utilize this advanced
technology in its new players, which include
27 MHz advanced digital
filters. This design yields D/A conversion
that's four times more
accurate than conventional 8-bit, 13.5 MHz
systems, resulting in an
artifact-free, crystal clear image.
Advancing picture quality
further is the addition of 3-DNR Picture
Enhancement in Toshiba's SD3108 and SD7108
DVD players. 3-DNR Picture
Enhancement is a user-selectable feature which
reduces the incidence
of random occuring noise. Additionally,
3-DNR
significantly improves image quality during
operation of Toshiba's
unique 25-sector picture zoom feature and
is also useful in reducing
picture noise during Video CD playback, a
capability included with
Toshiba's SD3108 and SD7108 players.
Unprecedented Audio Capabilities Mean More
Home Theater Options
Toshiba's new DVD-Video
players are designed to offer consumers the
most complete range of home theater audio
capabilities. The Models
SD7108, SD3108 and SD2108 are compatible with
Digital Theater Systems
(DTS)-encoded movie soundtracks, which employ
a high data-rate
perceptual coding system. DTS, an audio
system often featured in
movie theaters, is designed to deliver a higher
resolution
multi-channel audio experience when used in
conjunction with an
outboard DTS decoder. The inclusion of DTS
compatibility in Toshiba's
new DVD players allows consumers to experience
firsthand the same
high-resolution multichannel audio tracks
of theatrical films right in
their home. Toshiba this year also includes
built-in Dolby Digital
(AC-3) decoding in its SD7108 and SD3108 DVD
players. This feature
allows consumers to connect each player's
outputs directly to a Dolby
Digital-ready amplifier and immediately enjoy
the benefits of
multi-channel Dolby Digital Surround Sound.
Unlike previous players
with built-in Dolby Digital decoding, these
new Toshiba models offer
on-screen control of all key Dolby Digital
performance parameters,
including speaker management, bass management,
and time delay,
providing users with the same level of multi-channel
control as
offered in sophisticated stand-alone processors.
Audiophiles and home-theater
enthusiasts alike will also appreciate
the sound-enhancing benefits of Toshiba's
advanced jitter reduction
circuitry. Special re-clocking circuits in
conjunction with the use of
a newly developed IC reduce jitter in all
Toshiba DVD players to
extremely low levels. The result is a more
stable stereo and
multi-channel sound field with finer, more
precise signal resolution.
For movie lovers who wish
to experience theater-like surround sound
using just their TV's built-in loudspeakers
or a basic two-channel
stereo system, every new Toshiba DVD player
includes Spatializer's
most advanced sound-enhancing process, Spatializer
N-2-2. Advanced
digital circuitry processes Dolby Digital
soundtracks (as well as PCM
soundtracks on Models SD7108 and SD3108) to
create a virtual surround
sound environment using just two speakers.
Unlike lesser approaches,
Spatilizer N-2-2 produces the most natural
virtual surround sound
available -- with no listener fatigue -- maintaining
the ideal
proportion of stereo, dialog and wrap-around
surround sound effects.
The N-2-2- Spatializer effect is also available
via the headphone
outputs on the Models SD3108 and SD7108.
Toshiba's new DVD players
also include 24-bit/96 kHz PCM audio
processing with Multi-Bit Delta-Sigma
D/A converters for
compatibility with PCM Audio-encoded two-channel
DVD-Video discs.
Advanced processing in the D/A converter achieves
a 10 dB improvement
in dynamic range, an 8 dB increase in signal-to-noise
ratios, and a
400% reduction in harmonic distortion. Several
record labels are
expected to introduce two-channel audio-exclusive
content DVD-Video
discs this year. Audiophiles are excited about
24-bit/96kHz
resolution, which provides a richer, warmer
and a more natural digital
representation of the original performance
than current CDs.
Attractive and Intuitive
Toshiba has redesigned the
cosmetics of its new DVD-Video players,
bringing a note of understated elegance to
the industry's most
advanced designs. Sleek and uncluttered, the
charcoal-gray faceplates are the ideal complement
to the most
sophisticated home theater systems and room
decors.
For 1998, Toshiba has added
a unique backlight to its intuitive
Preprogrammed Universal Remote Control (included
with the SD7108 and
SD3108) that's ideal for enjoying DVD movies
in low-light home theater
environments. Included on the remote is a
jog/shuttle control that
makes finding desired scenes quick and easy.
